Crack house?

Well, it has been awhile since I have posted anything. There has been a real health crisis in my family that isn't mine. The picture above is of two of my grand daughters hand quilting blocks for a pirate crazy quilt (from a kit that I got from Crazy Rebecca's Etsy store) while we wait for my son's surgery to finish up. They don't know what he has really... perhaps he had exposure to environmental toxins by living in an apartment where they may have been smoking crack. Just a guess from the Dr.s. Either way he is waiting for a double lung transplant.

Unless you test where you are moving into you won't know what is there. Most places that are on uninhabitable lists are not enforced because there just isn't the man power to do it.

We don't know that this is what happened to him. All we know is that his lungs are dying. When the dr. suggested this as some cause I grasped onto it because I needed something to blame. I suggest that you research it yourself if you are going to buy a property or move into one. Most countys have a list that will show where the "crack house' busts were or where the meth cooking labs were. If you are in one, and they find out, the team will give you a moment to gather a change of clothing and then evict you. Everything in the home will be contaminated and lost until it has been through decontamination procedures!

I think that I am going to have to be very careful when I make my next move.

Okay, so I can't seem to keep to a schedule at all right now...

random posting will happen until I get enough on the ball to keep on track!
Everyone, including myself, is a bit on edge right now with the fear porn people and the declarations of what is going to be happening in the near future. The only thing I can say is be ready for anything. Have some food stocks, have some drinking water, have some pet food and water for them also.
This is not new news... this is common sense. If you have a pantry you will not have to spin around in a circle three times and click your heels together before grabbing the car keys and heading out for fast food!
The garden is coming along at a nice clip and it is keeping me from losing my mind entirely. Somehow it seems to help when I get to dig in the soil. I think more clearly and don't panic at the drop of a hat.

The MonSter...

got me. I am only beginning to come back to day to day life again. It seems to have left me with a seizure pattern that is active so I am going to be trying to make myself post on Tuesdays as a exercise in getting back to it.
Thank you all very much for your patience.

Carbon sequestering...

in your home garden is easier than you think. Compost, vermiculture, and simply planting your garden will help. Add in some trees and bushes ... you can usually tie up all the carbon you produce with a bit of effort.
I am going to be using last years straw bale gardening as a layer in the raised beds this year. Along with some wood branches and some chips to start something that resembles hugelculture... a technique that uses wood in the raised beds to help hold water. Some of these beds (once established for a year) will need NO supplemental water at all. The wood acts as a sponge during the many years it takes for it to break down.
The best information I have found on this is on the Permies.com!

The hurrier I go...

the behinder I get!
I had some form of sickness or another for a month. I am so completely behind myself.
Tomorrow I will catch up on the quilting squares that I am behind on in the swap.
I may even get the kitchen mopped!
Good news is that while my voice sounds like a frog (I strained my vocal cords coughing) I am not talking on the phone!
Wish me luck.

pneumonia...

for the past week or so, and I have gotten nothing much done.

SO... I will post some pics tomorrow and see if I can get back in the swing of it all.
I can't be doing to bad... I made the water exercise class.

All the hubbub...

on the web about the Dervaes family and their recent copy writing of several terms that describe the urban homesteading movement has been loud and angry.
I for one do not intend to recognize their sovereignty over the words that even my Grand Parents used to describe their garden.
I am a townie who gardens. I do call myself an urban homesteader as that is closest to my self description. That there are "urban homesteading" laws that go back decades I think that this man's attempt to call himself "the father of urban homesteading" a farce.
Okay done fussing.

Baby Tangerine!

The light is really awful for the picture... but here is one! Little baby tangerine... fascinates me as the temperatures have been hovering around 0 for most of the last couple of weeks. I don't know how self sufficient this will make me... but it will be local! Sunday there is a pot luck for the local urban homesteaders group... I will let you know how that goes! Off to Denver for the day.

The tangerines are in flower

The house smells wonderful. The indoor jungle is doing well, watered with bathwater! So I am all happy about it.
Though I have a bug in the downstairs grow light room that I am going to have to tackle with a bit more of a vengeance. No pictures of that as the entire place looks awful!
So the house smells great ... Tropical! A really good thing on a day when the high might be -04f!
